Honoring the Spiritual Master Who Gave the World Kṛṣṇa
Vyāsa-pūjā is the sacred day when devotees honor the spiritual master, the transparent representative of Śrīla Vyāsadeva. For members of ISKCON, it is the annual opportunity to express gratitude to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, the Founder-Ācārya who brought the message of Lord Kṛṣṇa to the world.
Who is Śrīla Prabhupāda?
- Born in 1896 in Kolkata, India, Śrīla Prabhupāda devoted his life to spreading bhakti-yoga.
- At age 69, he sailed alone to America, carrying only a trunk of books and a few rupees.
- In just twelve years (1965–1977):
- He established over 100 temples worldwide.
- Published more than 70 books including Bhagavad-gītā As It Is and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
- Inspired thousands of disciples and introduced the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra globally.
Śrīla Prabhupāda fulfilled the desire of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu that the holy name of Kṛṣṇa be heard in every town and village.
What is Vyāsa-pūjā?
- Spiritual Significance – The spiritual master is honored as the representative of Vyāsadeva, compiler of the Vedas.
- Not personal worship – Glorifying Śrīla Prabhupāda is honoring the principle of guru—through whom transcendental knowledge flows.
- Direct connection to Kṛṣṇa – By pleasing the bona fide guru, one pleases Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself.
“The spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord.” – Gurv-aṣṭaka, Verse 7
